Atlas Copco has since 2011 a goal to construct new buildings according to a sustainable building standard such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or comparable Sustainable building criteria.
Nanjing R&D Center based on additional divisional (SDE, URE, ADS and GDE) engineering resources, focusing on applications and products designed in China for the Chinese market. Rocktec-China will provide specialist engineering services to the four divisional D&D teams in Nanjing and the other MR product companies in China. Gross square footage 4915.66 sqm, 282 people and test labs are included in the R&D center Nanjing. After Atlas Copco AB Board approved Nanjing R&D Center project, we decided to apply LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification. LEED certification is the recognized standard for measuring building sustainability. Achieving LEED certification is the best way for us to demonstrate that your building project is truly "green."
The LEED green building rating system -- developed and administered by the U.S. Green Building Council, nonprofit coalition of building industry leaders -- is designed to promote design and construction practices that increase profitability while reducing the negative environmental impacts of buildings and improving occupant health and well-being. The LEED rating system offers four certification levels for new construction -- Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum -- that correspond to the number of credits accrued in five green design categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources and indoor environmental quality.
Following are the LEED Certification process: 1. Register project; 2. Design phase document achievement; 3. Construction phase document achievement; 4. Audit by USGBC; 5. Get LEED certificate. Our project goal is LEED Gold Lever Certification and it’s a big challenge to us. LEED focus on building life cycle that meaning sustainable design construction and operations. According to LEED requirements, the designers got preliminary design scheme then use software to do energy consumption simulation and adjust the design scheme to reach our energy saving target. During the project construction, we efforts minimize environmental influence. Reduce pollution from construction activities by controlling soil erosion and prevent airborne dust generation. We choose cool roof system which can reduce roof temperature 25-30℃ and save energy cost about 20-70% compare to normal roof. We use the central energy monitor system which can monitor different energy consumption systems and easy analyze energy consumption and reduce maintenance cost. In order to reduce the use of drinking water, we invest to build a water processing system, processes the water used to flash toilet and irrigation. To reduce brand new material consumption, we choose more than 20% construction raw materials contain recycled. To reduce transportation, we choose more than 90% regional materials. To improve indoor environmental quality, we use low-emitting paints adhesives and carpets. We do fresh air ventilation according to LEED requirements.
This is a good beginning. Through the R&D Center LEED certification, we committed to employees’ health, environmental protection, sustainable productivity and social responsibility.
