A successful China debut of Atlas Copco C8 full-hydraulic core drilling rig at Taihe, Xichang

The exploration drilling task at Taihe mine consists of three stages. The first stage was completed in September 2011. The second stage started in early 2012. The plan is to complete three 1000m-level holes. So far, the ZK1313 hole, 1618.9 meters deep, has been completed and this is the first deep hole drilled by Atlas Copco C8 rig at Taihe.

Panzhihua-Xichang region, one of the two major locations of vanadium-titanium magnetite ore deposits in China, has a reserve of about 10 billion tons. As one of the four large ore beds of vanadium-titanium magnetite in the region, Taihe iron mine has a proved reserve of 950 million tons and is an extra large ore deposit in China. In 2010, the mine was included in one of the four programs in China for intensive mineral exploration and it was estimated that the exploration would discover new reserves of more than 3 billion tons of vanadium-titanium magnetite.
 
Long-term cooperation brings trust in Atlas Copco
 
Sichuan Huafeng Drilling Project Co., Ltd. is responsible for all drilling tasks in the 47-square-kilometer intensive exploration program at Taihe mine. The company imported one unit of Atlas Copco Christensen C8 full-hydraulic core drilling rig (with drilling capacity of 1830 m in N size), the first unit in mainland China.

The exploration drilling task at Taihe mine consists of three stages. The first stage was completed in September 2011, with a total drilling amount of 23,000 drill meters (all finished in N size) and 16 deep holes with their depth of more than 1000 meters (the deepest one reached 1480.9 meters). The second stage started in early 2012. The plan is to complete three 1000m-level holes. So far, the ZK1313 hole, 1618.9 meters deep, has been completed and this is the first deep hole drilled by Atlas Copco C8 rig at Taihe.  
When asked why choose the first unit of C8 drill rig in China, Mr. Zheng Jiawen, General Manager of  Huafeng Drilling said: “We have long-term cooperation with Atlas Copco and know its drill rigs very well. It is an honor for us to become the first C8 user in China!”
 
C8 shows its strength in front of difficulties
 
The ground formation at Taihe mine is very complicated and difficult for drilling. The thickness of drift sand and sandy gravel layers can reach more than 550 meters. Many holes should be finished with small drilling angles and the maximum depth can exceed 1600 meters.  In such harsh conditions, it only took 70 days for the C8 to complete a 1618.9 meters-deep hole. Both the drilling time and the hole quality met the requirements of the proprietor and a production value of RMB 2 million yuan was achieved.
 
According to Mr. Ding Xiao, Manager of Taihe iron mine project of Huafeng Drilling, the hole drilling diameter of the rig is 76.5 millimeters, the core diameter is 47.6 millimeters and its lateral deviation of drilling is about 1º per 100metres, which is one time better than the Chinese national standard (the Chinese national standard for drilling deviation is 2º per 100metres).

The C8 rig drill operates in two shifts per day and 4 workers work for 12 hours in each shift. The average penetration in a shift is about 13-14metres and the monthly penetration is about 800metres. The monthly penetration of the drill reaches 1350 meters. For each 100 meters penetration, the drill takes about 50% less time than other ordinary drills while its fuel consumption is about 5% lower than other brands of similar grade drill rigs operating at the same site. Furthermore, the drill rig uses genuine Atlas Copco drill rods. The average service life of these rods can reach 8000-9000metres at Taihe mine, which is about 10% longer than that of other brands of similar grade drill rods.  
When talking about the performance of the rig, Mr. Ding said: “The biggest merit of C8 is its high reliability. This is very important to our operation in complicated conditions.” In addition, Mr. Ding also gave high comments on the perfect aftermarket service and quick response of Atlas Copco.
