Atlas Copco and Sanjiang Mining Continued the Cooperation to Create Glories
Located in the Dashanding limestone mining field of Xintong Town, the mining field of Hangzhou Hanggang Sanjiang Mining Co., Ltd. has currently adopted such mining methods as level bench and medium and deep hole blasting, with all the drilling equipment being Atlas Copco drilling rigs, and including two ROC D7 hydraulic surface drilling rigs and two ROC L6 hydraulic surface down-the-hole drilling rigs. The four drilling rigs undertake such tasks as all drilling works, partial road tunneling and platform clear-up.
The Dashanding limestone mining field is characterized in low silicon contents in limestone and plenty of karst caves in the rock mass. To the common hydraulic drilling rig, the phenomenon of drill jamming often occurs, while the automatic anti-jamming system of the Atlas Copco drilling rig can better cope with this condition. At present, the Sanjiang Mining Dashanding mining field is just the middle-sized mine at most from the equipment quantity, and the number of the operating personnel for hole drilling, blasting, scraping, etc. is just 80 or 90; while looking from the annual output of 5 million tons, the mining field is a truly large-sized mine. “We achieve the annual output of a large-sized mine by relying on the quantity of equipment of a middle-sized mine, and the efficient operation depends on the significant help of Atlas Copco drilling rig”, Gao Chengwang, deputy GM of Sanjiang Mining, said affirmatively.
High-efficiency drilling rig
The area of Sanjiang Mining Dashanding mining field is small in the initial scale. The annual output of limestone before 2002 is 0.5 to 0.6 million tons, and no large scale infrastructure is constructed. During the later stage of output expansion, a lot of infrastructure construction needs to be conducted, especially the platform clear-up due to complex terrain and steep slope. At that moment, the first Atlas Copco ROC D7 drilling rig purchased by Sanjiang Mining in 2002 showed better advantages. The ROC D7 drilling rig can drill holes from different angles, and the protraction width can even reach over 4m, thus playing an important role in such aspects as road tunneling and the platform clear-up, and laying the solid foundation for the great expansion of output in later period.
Along with an increasing growth of mining quantity, Sanjiang Mining purchased the first Atlas Copco ROC L6 hydraulic surface downhole drilling rig in 2003. The high-efficiency productivity of ROC L6 is the key factor of Sanjiang Mining’s favoring Atlas Copco. “ROC L6 features big hole drilling diameter, ranging from 140 mm to 155 mm; moreover, it takes only two to three minutes in drilling per meter,” said Manger Gao, “moreover, the required footage is very big, and ROC L6 can drill 300 m everyday, and thus form thousands of tons of mineral reserve for later blasting and scraping. For the enterprise pursuing high efficiency just like us, ROC L6 is the most suitable choice.”
At present, Sanjiang Mining has completely realized the mechanized mining with the 14 m platform, 15 m deep drill hole, hole pitch in 6.5 m, 4.5 to 5.5 m array pitch, and 140 to 155 mm bore diameter. Two drilling shifts per day are employed with one operator for each shift, as well as one underworker responsible for such tasks as oil change, diesel adding and blast hole cleaning. Operating 12h a day, the two drilling rigs can achieve the monthly output of over 0.4 million tons, with the annual output of 5 million tons. “We plan to break through the output based on the existing equipment,” said Manager Gao, “though the first ROC L6 drilling rig was purchased in 2003, performance of the drilling rig is very well in all respects due to good quality and considerate maintenance, which is also the basis for further promoting the output.”
Safety and Environmental Protection
When Sanjiang Mining bought the Atlas Copco drilling rig for the first time in 2002, operations with hand held rock drill were very common among private mining companies. As there was no dust collecting unit, dry mining was adopted. The operation site was full of dust, let alone the low efficiency. In the meantime, for the mining method is drilling and blasting which needs a lot of hand operations, it is harmful to the safety and health of workers.
Sanjiang Mining always puts the environmental protection and the safety of personnel at the first place. Except for considering the high efficiency of Atlas Copco drilling rig, the more environmental design is also a major reason that attracts Sanjiang Mining to choose Atlas Copco. Atlas Copco drilling rig integrates the advanced dust collecting unit, so one can hardly see dust on the operation site. And Atlas Copco drilling rig can be operated by only two workers, which greatly improves the safety of on-site operators.
Mining companies exist due to demands of social and economic development, but shall not sacrifice the ecological environment. Adopting more advanced and more environmental mining equipment is an inevitable trend. In 2002, Mr. Jiang Jianrong, president of Sanjiang Mining, passed by a mine in Ningbo, and saw the Atlas Copco drilling rig which was operating at an amazing efficiency. At that time, the largest bore diameter of hand held rock drills which were commonly used among private mining companies was 42 mm, but the bore diameter of Atlas Copco drilling rig at that time was 90 mm, and an advanced dust collecting unit has greatly improved the construction condition. Sending technicians to sites for inspections for several times, Sanjiang Mining decided to buy the first hydraulic drilling rig - Atlas Copco ROC D7 rig. After experiencing the high efficiency of this drilling rig, Sanjiang Mining purchased another ROC L6 drilling rig in 2003.
“The development tendency of the mining industry is to realize commercial scale and hi-tech operation. New application of mining technologies and equipment is an inevitable trend of the development in this industry.” Based on such consideration, Sanjiang Mining purchased a set of ROC L6 and a set of ROC D7 respectively in 2010 and 2011. Through the combination of the two ROC L6 rigs, the two ROC D7 rigs and other equipment, and also the scientific management of mining operations, Dashanding Mine of Sanjiang Mining has completed its transition of exploitation pattern from the high bench and small blasting exploitation to the level bench exploitation and the medium/deep hole blasting exploitation and other mainstream exploitation patterns adopted by large mines.
This huge transition is an achievement made by Sanjiang Mining, and also the best evidence showing that Atlas Copco served its customer with best products. With the yield expansion of Sanjiang Mining, Atlas Copco will continue to cooperate with Sanjiang Mining to create more glories.
