Atlas Copco Boomer 353E in Yellow Island underground LPG storage

Yellow Island LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) underground storage is in Qingdao Economic & Technical Development Zone. It is the largest underground LPG storage in the north of China. Atlas Copco Boomer 353E drill rigs are used for the whole drilling and blasting operation and got the highly praise of customer.

Yellow Island LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) underground storage is in Qingdao Economic & Technical Development Zone. It is the largest underground LPG storage in the north of China. It covers an area of 107.5 mu, and is only 1.6km from the liquid chemical terminal of Qingdao Port. The main part of the project is to build an underground LPG water-sealed storage cavern with a volume of 350,000 cubic meter, and a propane storage cavern with a volume of 150,000 cubic meter . Meanwhile, three 1000 cubic meter LPG aboveground spherical storage tanks will also be built. China Railway Tunnel Group No. 2 Mechanized Construction Company undertakes the underground excavation of the project.
 
Yellow Island underground LPG storage and LPG storage cavern are 80 -140m below the sea level; propane storage cavern is about 40m below the seal level, the storage cavern involves mostly large section excavation, 18m wide, 28m high, and the section of haulage drift is 8*7m. LPG stored in underground cavern can use the rock of tunnel wall directly, and it is inevitable that the rock may have cracks, so water curtain drift is excavated during the construction of cavern to seal it by injecting water. The difference in elevation between water curtain drift and cavern is about 28m, and it mainly adopts wet concrete spraying and mortar anchoring. Under the action of water curtain, the rock cracks around the cavern are filled with water, so as to play the role of water sealing, and also to prevent the oil gas from escaping from cracks of rock. 

There are many excavation sections and terraces, the excavation sequence is relatively complicated, the cavern rock is mostly granite of high hardness. So, drilling and blasting method is widely adopted for excavation by the mechanized construction company during the construction, and the tunneling mostly adopts large-wedge inclined-hole cut by drilling and blasting. Only two Atlas Copco Boomer 353E drill rigs are used for the whole drilling and blasting operation.
 
Mr. Zhou Zhenghua from China Railway Tunnel Group No. 1 mechanized Construction Company said: “Since the establishment of the mechanized construction company in late December 2005, it has owned four drill rigs; at the very beginning, it only had two Atlas Copco Boomer 353E drill rigs. We used six drilling rigs, an d four of them are Atlas Copco Boomer 353E and the other two are electro-hydraulic drill rigs of other brands. Over many years of construction experience, for drilling and blasting construction, Boomer 353E hydraulic drill rig has more advantages, i.e. simple operation, convenient maintenance, stable performance. Therefore, in Yellow Island LPG project, we undoubtedly select Atlas Copco Boomer 353E .”
  
 “During the construction, Boomer 353E can drill 25m deep at most, and the vertical drill is up to 15m. When drilling a 25m-deep hole, it adopts the drilling bit with the diameter of 76mm. If including the time of rod coupling, it needs around 1.5h; if the operator is skilled, it only needs 1h. When drilling a 5m-deep tunnel hole and bolt hole, it uses the drilling bit with the diameter of 48mm and 45mm, and a cycle from positioning to drilling is about 2-3min.”
 
The excavation of the whole cavern is divided into four layers, and what is doing now is the excavation of top heading, which is followed by the three benches, and there is communication channel between benches. By the middle of February, 2011, over 200,000 cubic meter has been excavated in 4.5 months, and the whole project will be completed by February 2012.

Due to the change of geological condition, with the excavation of tunnel, it may confront big cracks and inter-layers, and bring many adverse effects to the excavation. So the drilling shall avoid the big cracks and inter-layers, which has imposed higher requirements on drilling and blasting technology. In the process of excavation, good control of drilling precision of the drilling rig can effectively increase the blasting footage, reduce over-excavation and under-excavation, accelerate the excavation progress and lower the excavation cost. 
 
The full application of Boomer 353E also needs a set of excellent operator. From the personnel allocation, the mechanized construction comapny guarantees fixed person for fixed arm of each dril rig, each arm is equipped with three operators and six blasters. Their good command of operating skill makes Boomer 353E like a tiger with wings, and it can finish the construction task successfully.
