Atlas Copco PowerROC D45 greatly promotes Xiusong expressway construction progress

Chen Zhihui, a client in Yiyang, Hunan, was contracted for the rock excavation, slope support and bridge construction of China Railway 12th Bureau’s Xiusong Expressway project. After an investigation of the available full-hydraulic DTH surface drill rigs, he decided to introduce the PowerROC D45 full-hydraulic DTH surface drill rig newly released by Atlas Copco.

The Xiusong expressway project of China Railway 12th Bureau is located in beautiful Xiushan County, Chongqing, which is 40km from Huayuan County in western Hunan, near the border area between Hunan, Chongqing and Guizhou. Due to the area’s high mountains and thick forests, expressway construction often encounters engineering problems involving large amounts of earth excavation and the building of many bridges.

Careful selection, bold attempt

Chen Zhihui, a client in Yiyang, Hunan, was contracted for the rock excavation, slope support and bridge construction of China Railway 12th Bureau’s Xiusong Expressway project. Previously, the client had mainly used three diesel generators to drive trailer-mounted drill rigs, which were not only energy hungry and inefficient but also had a high failure rate. The urgent problem before Chen Zhihui, therefore, had become how to improve the drilling and blasting efficiency and reduce construction time. After an investigation of the available full-hydraulic DTH surface drill rigs, general manager Chen decided to introduce the PowerROC D45 full-hydraulic DTH surface drill rig newly released by Atlas Copco.

Improved efficiency, shortened construction time

The facts proved that Chen Zhihui’s selection was entirely correct. The Xiusong Expressway construction site rock has a medium-soft hardness. The drill holes have a 115mm diameter and depths of 8m to 15m. The geological structure is complex, with lots of cavities and drift sand formations. In light of the actual conditions of the construction site, the Atlas Copco sales representative configured DHD 4 Gold percussive hammers and 115mm drill bits for the PowerROC D45 drill rig purchased by general manager Chen. After a short time training the drill operators, the PowerROC D45 drill rig achieved ideal operating results on the construction site.

Presently, this drill rig operates in 8-hour shifts, and has an average advanve of 240m/shift, a net drilling speed of 45m/h (0.75m/min) and a comprehensive drilling rate of 30m/h, 5-6 times that of common trailer-mounted drills, while the fuel consumption is only 32L/h. As for labor costs, a PowerROC D45 drill rig requires only one operator while a common trailer-mounted rig needs 2~3 operators. Besides, the latter’s movement and positioning all require manual operations and a great deal of labor, meaning extra time and low operating efficiency.

The PowerROC D45 full-hydraulic DTH surface drill rig has a drill hole diameter ranging from 90mm to 130mm. Its clean and simple design reduces the failure rate remarkably and improves the working hour utilization rate, its compact structure and efficient system effectively reduces fuel consumption, and its outstanding climbing ability makes changing sites easy.

Construction of the Xiusong Expressway project requires frequent site changes, and sometimes, the site slope is 30 degrees or even higher. However, the PowerROC D45 drill rig takes it all in stride. “I used to fear that the drill rig could not climb so steep a slope, but it turns out it can climb such slopes really easily,” said general manager Chen Zhihui. “Compared with the previously used trailer-mounted drill rigs, the PowerROC D45 has lower energy consumption but much higher efficiency. If we carry out the construction at this speed, the total construction time will be cut 70%, greatly reducing our labor cost.”
