Atlas Copco DM75E drill rig starts work on 5200m-high plateau

2015-09-18

In light of the demanding natural environment, Liaoning Chengyuan Blasting Engineering Co., Ltd introduced two Atlas Copco DM75E drill rigs in May 2014. Both have since consistently delivered highly efficient and reliable performance 5,000m above sea level.

Hailed as the “Roof of the World”, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is a famous destination for scientific expeditions and ecotourism well-known for its unique cultural heritage and natural landscapes. The plateau also boasts abundant mineral resources as part of the Mediterranean-Tethyan metallogenic belt, one of the world's three major metallogenic belts which stretches across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, granting it the world’s best mineralization conditions and prospecting potential.  Over 120 mineral resources have been discovered in the plateau thus far, which is indicative of its enormous potential value for mining activities.

Located in Maizhokunggar country in the Tibet Autonomous Region, the Jiama Mine is owned by Huatailong Tibet Mining Development Co., Ltd. under the China National Gold Group Corporation. The mine broke ground in August 2008 with a total investment of RMB 3.5 billion and covers an area of 144 square kilometers. Standing at an average altitude of 4,780m (4,000m-5,360m), the Jiama Mine is designated as a high-altitude mining project, where the oxygen content is only 40-60% of that on a flat plain. The local climatic conditions are extremely treacherous.

Due to its location in the upper reaches of the Lhasa River, the mine features a terrain that descends from east to west and is frequented by natural disasters. In light of the demanding natural environment, the management at Jiama Copper Mine, Liaoning Chengyuan Blasting Engineering Co., Ltd introduced two Atlas Copco DM75E drill rigs in May 2014. Both have since consistently delivered highly efficient and reliable performance 5,000m above sea level.

Thoroughly customized for high altitude operations

According to Nanyang Jiang, Field Operations Manager of Chengyuan Blasting Engineering, the Jiama Mine mostly comprises of copper ore. Rock hardness is approximately F=7; bench height is 16m; subdrilling is 2m; the drilling angle is 90º; hole size and depth are 230mm and 18m, respectively. During official operation from May 2014 to August 2015, the two DM75E drilling rigs achieved overall and net drilling efficiency of 15m/hour and 18m/hour respectively, with an average motor power consumption of as low as 300 kilowatt-hour. Given electricity costs of 1.2 RMB per kilowatt-hour, the drill rigs have created a 40% reduction in costs when compared to diesel engine rigs. Daily operations at the mine are divided into two shifts, and each DM75E drill rig requires two operators per shift.

The technical engineers of Atlas Copco adapted the two DM75E drill rigs to the local high altitude operating conditions in the following ways:

1. Adopting motors and a high-voltage electrical control cabinet suitable for operation on high altitude plateaus;
2. The use of main frames which have been redesigned and redeveloped to deliver heavy-duty and fatigue-proof performance;
3. Adopting heavy-duty crawlers and chassis for optimal performance on the rugged work sites.

Perfect performance in extreme conditions

DM75E drill rigs are equipped with authentic 10.7m Atlas Copco drills, with an average service life of over 20,000m, 20% longer than other drills.

Speaking of the company’s decision to introduce the two DM75E drill rigs, Nanyang Jiang, Field Operations Manager of Chengyuan Blasting Engineering, said that “Although many other similar products were available on the market, we were confident in the Atlas Copco brand. The prompt and thoughtful technical support, customized improvements and professional maintenance provided by Atlas Copco during the working life of our machines have proven indispensable to our efficient drilling operations on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, 5,200m above sea level. The two drill rigs have provided considerable cost savings, improved operation efficiency and are highly mobile as well. They can meet our operating needs to work on different sites across the rugged mining area.

The successful operation of the DM75E drill rigs at the Jiama Copper Mine attest to the excellent performance of Atlas Copco’s electric rotary drills in high-altitude areas 5,000m above sea level. They are a secure and highly reliable option for mining companies planning to operate on high altitude plateaus.
