Atlas Copco MEYCO Cobra concrete spraying mobile goes into operation at Gujiatai iron mine

2015-08-07

To improve shotcrete supporting efficiency and mining environment, a unit of Cobra-a concrete spraying mobile was introduced to Gujiatai iron mine in September 2014 which is Atlas Copco MEYCO’s first unit in Chinese underground mine, and positive results were achieved.

Founded in 1958 as a subsidiary of Laigang Group, Laiwu Mining Co., Ltd. is widely noted for its high standards in iron ore processing/mining and good financial performance. There are three iron ore mines which are Gujiatai, Mazhuang and Yezhuang; Gujiatai mine is a heavy-water mine featuring extremely complex hydrogeological conditions. To improve shotcrete supporting efficiency and mining environment, a unit of Cobra-a concrete spraying mobile was introduced to Gujiatai iron mine in September 2014 which is Atlas Copco MEYCO’s first unit in Chinese underground mine, and positive results were achieved.

A well-equipped modern mine

Gujiatai iron mine is located 1,000m to the east of Fangxia County, approximately 10km to the west of Laiwu city, Shandong Province. Its annual output is 1 million tons of ore and main product is magnetite. The main ore body is 2,300 m in length which is buried in a marble and diorite contact zone at an inclination of 30~40°.It has an average thickness of 14.96 m, an average grade of 47.98% and the total reserve is 79.02 million tons. The iron ore is also associated with copper, cobalt and sulfur which are suitable for integrated extraction.

As of June 2015, a number of Atlas Copco machines have been in operation at the Gujiatai iron mine, including Boomer 281 drilling rig, Boltec 235 bolting rig, EST 3.5 electric loader, Diemac U6 core drilling rig, Mixtec UV2 concrete mixer truck and MEYCO Cobra concrete spraying mobile. All of these modern machines help to build a solid foundation for the rapid development of Gujiatai iron mine.

Equipment of high performance has significantly improved productivity

Since the official operation of Atlas Copco MEYCO Cobra concrete spraying mobile at Gujiatai iron mine in September 2014, the concrete pump has worked a total of 138 hours and sprayed a total of 1,126 m3 shotcrete. Cross-section of the drift is 3.6 m tall and 4m wide, and it works 8-hour per shift, 2 shifts per day with 2-3 operators.

According ZHANG Yong, Production Technical Supervisor of Gujiatai iron mine, Cobra has been working at an output of 6-8 m3/hour (the maximum output is 20 m3/hour), which is in line with the current shotcrete requirement at the Gujiatai mine, and the spraying output may be further increased to meet changing requirements. At present, the Cobra sprays two tanks of shotcrete per shift with each tank capacity of 3.5 m3, which takes approximately 40 minutes to complete. The thickness of each layer or spray is 3-5 cm (typically two layers are sprayed, i.e. first and second layers). During each spray, Cobra is repositioned after 2-3 m advance. The average rebound rate of sidewall and roof is approximately 10%. Operators clean the equipment completely after every spray session.

Jian Song, one of the operators of Cobra, highly praised the machine: “Compared with the dry-spraying machines we used before, this wet mix concrete sprayingequipmentgreatly improved the working environment, and the working efficiency of each shift is almost 5 times of the dry-spraying machine. This wet mix concrete spraying machines has a lower rebound rate, and with the feature of intelligent operation, the machines is quite easier to access for the operators.”

High-quality products winning customer’s trust

Chengda Ren, Equipment Supervisor of Laiwu Mining Co., Ltd., talked about the reason why they decided to purchase Atlas Copco concrete spraying mobile: “We have a long-term cooperation relationship with Atlas Copco and we are very satisfied with their product quality and after-sale service. These are the main reasons why we chose Atlas Copco MEYCO Cobra over other options.”

Looking into the future,, Laiwu Mining Co. Ltd. will still follow the pollution-free mining approach, and pay more attention to the health of its workers while enhancing productivity and working environment as well as reducing labor intensiveness by introducing advanced automation equipment, and to make contribution to the sustainable development of the mining industry.
