Technologyinnovation to create a low carbon economy

Board members from Swedish industrial giant Atlas Copco Group visit one of their key Chinese business partners in Wuhu, Anhui province on Nov 1, 2011.

The high-level delegation team including chairman Atlas Copco Board, Sune Carlsson, President & CEO Atlas Copco Group, Ronnie Leten, President Atlas Copco Mining & Rock Excavation Technique Business Area, Robert Fassl, meets the management team of Anhui Conch Group led by Guo Wensan, chairman of Conch Group in Wuhu.

The two sides discuss the new trends in cement industry both in the world and in China, exchanging their ideas on how to build a strategic relationship in an aim to help create energy-saving and environmental-friendly economy.

Guo Wensan, chairman of Conch Group, gives a comprehensive introduction to his Swedish guests on his company’s history, major achievements and future perspectives.

As two multinational companies, the question of how to strengthen their strategic partnership during global expansion is on top of the two parties’ agenda during their meeting in Wuhu.

China produces more than half of the world’s cement. Cement production in China reached 1.88 billion tons in 2010, up 13.94 percent compared with last year. Chinese cement producers face challenges of overcapacity in domestic market. Basing on China’s domestic market, Conch Group will also focus on overseas expansion.

Conch Group has singed an MOU with partners in Jakarta in the first half of this year, investing $2.35 billion and building several production lines in Indonesia.

Conch Group plans to double its current production capacity in the coming five years in order to reach the cement production capacity of 0.3 billion tons per year. As overseas long-term partner, Atlas Copco will provide technologies and solutions to Conch Group by then to help Conch’s overseas expansion.

How to save more energy and cut down greenhouse gas emission, achieving a sustainable development is another key topic during the meeting of the two sides. Conch Group has been focusing on green mine construction. Atlas Copco, a leading mining equipment manufacturer in the world, has always been paying attention to technology innovation.

President Hu Jintao said earlier that innovation is the core strategy of China’s development, which is also the key to enhance the comprehensive competitiveness of the whole country.

The partnership between Atlas Copco and Conch Group will not only offer high-efficiency solutions to mine development and management but also enhance corporate influence and strengthen their positions of industrial leadership.

Sharing the same goal- environmental protection

Atlas Copco was established in 1873 and has a global reach spanning more than 170 countries and regions. As a heavy machinery and equipment manufacturer providing high-tech products, helping clients to realize the best solution is the goal of Atlas Copco.

Atlas Copco is selected by the Forbes this year as one of the Top 100 innovative companies in the world. It ranks 13th this year in a ranking of global industrial equipment manufacturers, measuring the quality of the companies’ patent portfolio by the Patent Board, an independent patent analytics and research company in the United States.

The company is the first in the world to offer certificated “Net Zero Energy Consumption” compressors in 2009, which has significant impacts to those high energy consumption factories.

The development of low-carbon economy and energy-saving is also the key strategy of Conch Group. As China’s largest cement manufacturer with 80 companies in 17 provinces, Conch’s cement output has been ranking the top in Asia for eight consecutive years and ranks the second in the world.

Conch has been a loyal customer to Atlas Copco Group and has bought around 120 surface drilling equipments from Atlas Copco. Those equipments have well performance in terms of safety operation, energy saving and environmental protection.

Helping cement industry achieve the goal set by the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015)

Atlas Copco is the first company, which reached a strategic partnership agreement with China Cement Association on December 9, 2010.

The key challenges that cement companies face now are how to maximize the profit margin and have better mining resources management.

The equipments that Atlas Copco produces can not only help them increase mining resources utilization but also cut down energy consumption, building low-carbon and environmental friendly mines.

Atlas Copco established its Nanjing construction mining equipment company in 1993 and built its first plant there. With more than a decade of development, Atlas Copco set up plant in Wuxi, Shenyang, Zhangjiakou and established a national wide sales and service network.

In addition, Atlas Copco invested 50 million yuan to build a 4,000-square-meter logistic center in Nanjing in 2010, the largest in Asia Pacific area, which not only reduces the lead time for domestic customers but also increases products distribution efficiency in the whole Asia-Pacific area. Furthermore, inauguration of Atlas Copco (Nanjing) R&D Center was held in Nanjing on October 31st, 2011. The new R&D Center will offer our Chinese customers a shorter time-to-market for products designed to meet their specific needs.

As the world’s leading industrial equipment and solution provider, Atlas Copco is keen to promote the sustainable development of China’s cement industry and provide new technologies and new equipments so that cement industry in China can achieve the green goal set by the 12th Five-Year Plan.
