Atlas Copco Helps to Create “Better city, Better life”

Shanghai China, May 27, 2010 – Atlas Copco presented solutions for turning waste into clean fuel at a Shanghai Expo 2010 environment seminar, highlighting the Group’s commitment to introducing technology for sustainable productivity and environmental benefits in China.

Climate concerns and dwindling fossil fuel resources are driving increasing demand for renewable energy solutions, and many countries have passed legislation to increase the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar energy, wind power, biogas and biomethane. The solutions that Atlas Copco presented integrate waste management solutions with the production and use of a clean fuel, biogas/biomethane, which can also be used as a renewable vehicle fuel, if thebiogas is cleaned and pressurized up to 200 bars with the help of Atlas Copco compressors.

Atlas Copco’s compression technologies can be used when drying the biomethane after the upgrading from biogas, compressing the biomethane for injection into the natural gas grid and compressing biomethane in filling stations.
 
Biogas/biomethane is not a fossil fuel and therefore does not add greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The use of landfill or waste for biogas production can even lead to a reduction of CO2 emissions as methane leaks to the atmosphere are prevented (methane has a 23 times greater greenhouse gas effect than CO2). Vehicle gas fuel (biomethane, natural gas or mixture of both) can replace traditional vehicle fuels.  Switching from petrol and diesel to vehicle gas can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30% for natural gas to about 95% for biomethane, and most importantly, those most environmentally harmful compounds are absent when biomethane is used.
