China’s First PV351 Drill Put into Successful Operation at Nanfen Iron Mine, Benxi Steel
Nanfen is one of the open pit iron mines in China and even in the world that have the most complicated geological conditions and the highest rock hardness. The comprehensive drilling productivity has always been a problem. But the arrival of PV351 has changed this situation. It will be used in surface blast hole drilling. It is believed that the productivity of Nanfen Open Pit Mine will be greatly improved as this first PV351 drill in China was delivered. The deal will also bring concrete experience and good image to Atlas Copco in its market expansion of PV351 among open pit mines in China.
As a major raw material production facility of Benxi Steel and one of the biggest ferrous metal mines in China, Nanfen Open Pit Iron Mine has a long history and covers an area of 13.15 square kilometers. The mine has rich reserves and good occurrence conditions. So far the total proved reserves of the mine amount to more than 1 billion tons. Presently the mine has an annual output of 13 million tons of iron ore and its annual excavation reaches 88 million tons. The PV351 drill is the biggest smart drill that Nanfen mine has bought. It is also the first drill rig of its type that Atlas Copco delivers in China. The weight on bit is 56,700kg and its single pass depth is 19.8m. It is equipped with WEG 6811 motor (1400hp) and Ingersoll Rand screw compressor (up to 107.6m3 /email@example.com). Its rotary head produces a torque up to 25.7kN·m. The weight of the total rig reaches 180 tons. The drill can be used for single pass drilling of angled (up to 30º) or vertical holes, and for drilling of blast holes of 270-406 mm in diameter in rock layers and overburden. At Nanfen mine, the PV351 will be used in surface blast hole drilling and contribute to higher productivity of the mine.
Since the launch of the rig at MINExpo 2000 in Las Vegas, near 100 PV351 drills have been sold in more than 10 countries. The drill is suitable for applications in open pit iron mines and non-ferrous metal mines. World-famous iron ore suppliers including Vale, BHP Billiton, and Rio Tinto have bought this drill as their major equipment in blast hole drilling. This first PV351 delivered to China marks a milestone of Atlas Copco’s large rotary drilling rigs in successfully opening the high-end market in China’s open pit mines. “The successful use of PV351 makes Nanfen mine have better production continuity in its drilling, loading and transportation processes,” says General Manager Gao Lie satisfactorily, “We believe Atlas Copco will provide us with good aftermarket service and help us expand market share in our future development.”
“Nanfen is one of the open pit iron mines in China and even in the world that have the most complicated geological conditions and the highest rock hardness. The comprehensive drilling productivity has always been a problem for us,” says Mr. Yan Xiaokun, PV351 Chief Operator. “But, the arrival of PV351 has changed this situation. One very important factor is that this drill is equipped with the most powerful air compressor in history, which not only significantly increases cuttings extraction speed and drilling efficiency, but also reduces the occurrence of secondary breaking, and further reduces drill bit wear and our production cost.” When mentioning the operation of PV351, Yan Xiaokun becomes excited, “this drill provides unprecedented comfort for operators. In the cab, there is an LCD screen displaying real-time operation data. The operator can easily control this mammoth just through joysticks and say goodbye to the traditional operation panel. The height of the operator’s seat is adjustable and the seat can swivel 360 degrees. This design not only ensures the operator’s visibility, but also reduces their fatigue.” “Many options are available with this drill, such as auto-leveling, GPS hole navigation, rock examination and auto drilling, and remote control etc. It will help a lot in the drill management if we can add some of these options in our future purchases,” Yan adds.
At present, Atlas Copco has 16 companies and more than 10 plants in China, including 3 plants manufacturing construction and mining equipment. “In view of different customer needs and different working and production environments, the Atlas Copco drilling solutions equipment developed and manufactured in China and that manufactured in US facilities complement each other and have met the needs of mines in China very well. Good equipment must be accompanied with good service. Atlas Copco has already opened branches in Baotou and Urumchi and will open more in other regions to provide local customers with prompt parts supply and maintenance service,” says Freddy Man.
It is believed that the productivity of Nanfen Open Pit Mine will be greatly improved as this first PV351 drill in China was delivered. The deal will also bring concrete experience and good image to Atlas Copco in its market expansion of PV351 among open pit mines in China.
