May 7 2010, an important day for Atlas Copco, saw Carving for a Wonderful Life together towards the Future—Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Technique 2010 Shanghai Expo Customer Event Opening. Bjorn Rosengren, President of Atlas Copco Construction & Mining Technique and Senior Executive Vice President of Atlas Copco AB, Freddy Man,General Manager of Atlas Copco Construction & Mining Technique Customer Center, Greater China, and about 660 guests from all parts of country and Atlas Copco staff attended the opening.

“Welcome to our Shanghai Expo Customer Event”, Mr. Bjorn Rosengren said, “China has surprised the world one time after another with its capabilities in feeding the largest population in the world, in its quick and effective salvage actions in the face of natural catastrophes, in organizing unprecedented spectacular events like the Olympic Games, and most importantly, its unbelievable speed in boosting the social and economic development. Today, China has amazed the world again for organizing 2010 World Expo. The participating countries and organizations for this year’s Expo are exceeding 240. With the 184 days between May 1 and Oct 31, it is expected to have 70 million visitors. All these numbers are new records.”

Atlas Copco has the honor to participate in this World Expo in Shanghai as official partner of the Swedish Expo Pavilion. With this opportunity, we would like to share and experience this event with our partners here in China. The Swedish pavilion at Expo 2010 will contain the Swedish exhibition, VIP areas and other facilities. The 3,000 square meter building will be located in the European section alongside the other Nordic countries.

The theme for Sweden’s participation in Expo 2010 in Shanghai - Spirit of Innovation and the focus in the Expo - Sustainability, Innovation and Communication are perfect match with the Atlas Copco core values of Innovation, Interaction and Commitment and also with our brand promise of "Committed to Sustainable Productivity”. Committed to sustainable productivity means that we do everything we can to ensure reliable, lasting results with responsible use of resources; human, natural, and capital.

Sustainability is not only about the environment, although that is one of many important aspects. For us, being committed to sustainable productivity covers a range of subjects: interacting with our customers, developing innovative products, having a good, diverse workplace for our employees, investing in competence development, engaging in our local communities and making safe, efficient products with a minimum of negative environmental impact.

Delivering on the promise of sustainable productivity will require a lot of hard work from all of us, constantly seeking to improve our processes and products. Through this work, Atlas Copco will benefit by becoming an even stronger and better company.

As a matter of fact, Atlas Copco is rated by external rating institutes on how we are performing in these areas. We are proud to be included in Innovest’s listing of the 100 most sustainable companies in the world. We are also a member of the FTSE4Good Index Series. In 2008, Atlas Copco signed membership in the UN Global Compact, which the Group has supported for many years. Also Risk Transparency Award was received for Risk Management in the Annual Report 2008.

Mining and construction can sometimes be disturbing, but they are also essential for the growth of a society. Atlas Copco is working hard to minimize the negative impact the equipment may have on the surrounding environment.Atlas Copco’s silenced drill emits a noise level lower than that of other rigs on the market, making the Silenced SmartRig one of the world’s quietest running rigs. Additionally, computerized features for hole navigation and planning of the drill pattern, makes the rig even more productive.

Atlas Copco does not only import the most advanced products to China, but also localizes and further develops the products. Up to date, we have set up 12 manufacturing plants in China, which keep providing products that are suitable for the Chinese market as well for export. The localization of products by our technical teams has strongly supported our sustainable productivity.

Finally, “I am very glad to see all of you here in Shanghai, one of the most attracting city in the world, and also the city in which I shall be living in for the coming years.” Mr. Bjorn Rosengren said。As the gravity of the world is moving East, I decided to move the head quarter of the Construction and Mining business area to China, to be closer to our most important customers, to be able to better understand, anticipate and accommodate your needs. Nobody can resist the temptation to experience and be part of this fast booming economy.
