Ready for launch in China: The new Atlas Copco Boyles C8C core drill, a robust and stable rig with a powerful main hoist. The rig is specially designed for high productivity coupled with simplicity and easy maintenance.

Atlas Copco is launching a new surface core drilling rig that focuses on power and simplicity to make exploration operations available to the broadest possible range of drilling professionals.

Called Atlas Copco Boyles C8C, the rig will be officially launched at the China Mining exhibition in Tianjin (3-6 November), and will be introduced to the international market at bauma China in Shanghai (27-30 November).

At the same time, the launch will mark a change of name for this particular range of exploration equipment which was previously marketed under the name “C-series”. The Boyles product range will complement the existing Christensen range of surface core drilling rigs manufactured in Märsta, Sweden.

Martin Sommers, Vice President Marketing - Capital Equipment at Atlas Copco’s Geotechnical Drilling and Exploration division, explains:  “Atlas Copco is one of the world leaders in surface core drilling rigs and for more than 100 years exploration professionals have depended on our ability to deliver excellent results in conditions of extreme heat, cold, drought, humidity, or high altitude.

“The Atlas Copco Boyles C8C has been specially designed for high productivity with maximum simplicity and ease of service and maintenance”.

The Boyles C8C is equipped with a powerful main hoist (capacity 133 kN, 30 000 lb), and a rod holder with a gas cartridge for long service life that handles rods from BO to PO size and casing up to PW. It has a proven and reliable rotation unit that can generate the highest penetration rate and a 4-speed gearbox that converts power into high torque.

Radio remote controlled is standard equipment of The Boyles C8C. The tramming functions of the rig can be precisely controlled from a safe distance, eliminating the danger of being on or next to the machine while in motion. If radio contact is lost, tramming will stop automatically."

The rig offers a depth capacity of 1 830 meters (6 000 ft) and is equipped with a newly designed level-wind wire line winch which rolls the wire evenly across the full width of the drum. Another advantage is that the rig is designed to allow users to carry out service and maintenance functions in the field.

Effective January 1, 2013, the Atlas Copco Boyles range of core drilling rigs, incorporating Boyles C6, C6C and now the C8C, will be available in selected countries around the world.

Note to Editors: The name “Boyles” originates from the Boyles company in Canada which was acquired by Atlas Copco in 1998. The Boyles surface rigs have a long and rich history characterized by robust design, good customer value and ease of service. These attributes have been incorporated into the new range of Boyles drills.
