Freddy Man wins “New Leaders of the Chinese Economy” award


Beijing, China, December 20, 2015: Freddy Man, General Manager of Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation Technique Customer Center in Greater China, has won a “New Leaders of the Chinese Economy” award at the 2015 China Economic Summit Forum and The Thirteenth Session of the Annual Meeting China Economic Characters (CESF&TSAMCEC).

The 2015 CESF&TSAMCEC is jointly organized by the China Economic Herald of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and China Economic Information magazine of Economic Daily. Its aim is to identify and honor champions of economic development who are helping to realize the “Chinese Dream” (state-sponsored initiative), under the award rubrics of “New Normal”, “New Economy” and “New Campaign.” The winners are selected for their abilities in innovation, spreading influence, making contributions, fostering development and managing businesses.
Freddy Man received a 2015 “New Leaders of the Chinese Economy Award” in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the following areas: automation of mining and construction, support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and sustained contributions to education-related philanthropic causes.  

Dedication to automation in the mining industry 
In China today, mining companies need advanced technologies and equipment to meet “green mining” requirements of energy conservation and emissions reduction.  Atlas Copco has remained the leader in the field of drilling equipment computerization and automation ever since its introduction of a computerized Rig Control System (RCS) in 1998, ensuring state-of-the-art products and services at all types of mining and infrastructure projects in China. By introducing advanced products of Atlas Copco into China market, Freddy Man further expand the product portfolio. Concurrently, he proactively promotes the concepts of "Made in China" and even "Made by China", and contributes to the local product series in China. The transfer from the production of a single product to diversified products by China, as well as the extension from high-end market to mid-end market, provide Chinese users with more cost-effective products that are suitable for local applications. These measures enhanced the standard of China's mining and construction equipment at an accelerating pace, and promoted the development of mechanization in the industry. Use of mechanized and automated equipment has brought about significant productivity improvement in key projects. Atlas Copco’s mining and construction equipment has served in a wide range of major national projects, including Jungar Coal Mine (China’s largest opencast mine), Meishan Iron Mine (China’s largest underground iron ore mine), Jinchuan in Gansu Province (China’s largest nickel deposit), Anhui Conch Cement (China’s largest cement producer), the Three Gorges Project (the largest water conservancy project in the world), and the Qinling Railroad Tunnel (China’s longest railroad tunnel).

Keen support for SMEs  
Lacking sufficient internal impetus, China’s economic growth has slowed in recent years. SMEs have become the prevalent economic entities in the socioeconomic system. To serve the enormous small and midsized business community of China’s mining and construction sectors, Freddy Man in 2011 proposed a marketing approach focusing on “channel expansion along two parallel lines:” beefing up authorized regional distributorship businesses, supporting the development of SMEs, and launching a range of highly cost-effective products tailored to SMEs to further consolidate Atlas Copco’s competitiveness in this segment. So far, this strategy has shown steady progress, with step-by-step successes. With the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization in China, demand for natural resources has shown increasing rigidity. Resource development and utilization models adopted by many Chinese mines are of extensive scale, which has led to environmental issues in mining operations. Freddy Man has called for enhanced communication with clients and help for SMEs in selecting more efficient and eco-friendly products, to shift them from high energy consumption and environmental recklessness to “green” mine development, in line with the “green mine construction” principle, combined with being launched on the Chinese market of more low energy-consumption and eco-friendly products with reduced noise and dust generation, to promote healthy competition and development in the mining industry.  
Sustained contributions to education-related philanthropic causes  
Ever since his appointment as General Manager of Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation Technique Customer Center in Greater China in 2004, Freddy Man has always dedicated himself to promoting the management philosophy of Atlas Copco Group and the talent development program, pushing forward the company’s education sponsorship initiatives in mainland China. Atlas Copco scholarship-stipend fund-faculty grant initiatives were launched in 2011, including scholarships offered to outstanding students, financial assistance for students from poor families and faculty grants for accomplished teaching staff involved in teaching, research and student management activities. Through the scholarship (stipend fund/faculty grant) program, Atlas Copco has collaborated with many Chinese universities (e.g. Xinjiang University, Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology and China University of Geosciences) to foster and train fully qualified mining professionals in China. The program has so far benefited more than 500 award recipients in China. “We hope we can play our part in contributing to education in China through this program,” said Freddy Man.  
In September 2015, Freddy Man won the Manger of the Year Award by China Construction Machinery Magazine, in recognition of his remarkable contributions to economic development in China – especially in mining and construction mechanization – during his 35-year professional career.
