Atlas Copco makes “Water for All” possible in Jiaxian County
On September 27, 2013, 13 employees from different entities of Atlas Copco (China) Investment Co.,Ltd. visited the company- sponsored water sanitation project called “Water for All”begin in Jiaxian, a county in north Shaanxi Province, about 100 kilometers from Yulin City. The project providing two villages and one primary school there with safe drinking water and raising their health awareness has benefited 1,620 villagers including 586 children.
Located in the northwest mountainous area of the Loess Plateau, Jiaxian County has a high level of poverty. There are many issues facing the local residents, such as shortage of safe water supply system and insufficient sanitary facilities. The previous water supply had been destroyed by the flood. The Jianxian project, launched in October 2012, includes the construction of water supply system for Cheng Jia Gou Village and Zhang Jia Gou Village, and a hygienic latrine and drainage ditch for Wuzhen Central Primary School. With the support of Jiaxian County Women’s Federation, training activities on child-centered disaster risk reduction and health awareness raising were conducted to help the children form good hygiene habits.
“The implementation of this project has helped to solve the urgent water and environmental sanitation issues in Zhang Jia Gou Village and Wuzhen Central Primary School in Wuzhen Township since the flood.” Li Xiaorong, a supervisor of the program office in Wuzhen Township said, “The local villagers and children now have a better living environment and increased awareness on sanitation. The community is also motivated by this project and happily involved. We really appreciate the contributions from Atlas Copco and Plan International (China).”
“I was so touched by what I have seen in the two days’ visit.” said Sally Li, who came from Dynapac (China) Compaction & Paving Equipment Co., Ltd. and made this trip in Jiaxian together with other Water for All donors, “Our project really helped the villagers and students in needs for clean water. I will share my experience with my colleagues and encourage their participation of the program.”
“We’re extremely glad to see villagers with access to sufficient safe water, and children being able to use sanitary latrines in the school.” said Liselotte Duthu, Vice President of Atlas Copco (China) Investment Co., Ltd. “Atlas Copco believes ‘Clean water is a human right’. Jiaxian is the third of “Water for All” projects we have accomplished in consecutive three years in China. We’ll continue our efforts, by providing people in needs with access to clean water supply and contributing to Chinese social development.”
Founded in 1984 by Atlas Copco employees in Sweden, the “Water for All” has provided fresh water to around one million people in developing countries. China saw the launch of “Water for All” in 2008 and its projects successfully conducted in Longde County, Ningxia Autonomous Region and Xixiang County, Shaanxi Province. At the 7th Annual AmCham (The American Chamber of Commerce in China) Shanghai CSR Awards Ceremony in 2012, Atlas Copco received “Partnership Award”, together with Plan International (China), for the implementation of “Water for All” projects in China.
